“If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always be where you’ve always been.”

As I grow older (and hopefully wiser as well), it becomes clearer to me that some of life’s greatest secrets are actually the simplest truths. It’s not hard to look around and see an abundance of hurt, resentment, anger and addictions in others that too often drives those very people to live beneath their potential. How did they get there? How did they become the way they are? Did they see it coming? These questions often haunt me as I wonder the same things regarding my own life.
We don’t just wake up one day and suddenly life is an utter mess. Yes, life deals us unforeseen tragedies and trials, but I am referring to those matters in our lives in which we do have control over. The problem is that too often we relinquish power over things we do have a say over simply because we don’t realize we can do something about them. If there is anything I’ve learned it’s that we don’t have to accept the negative things that are dealt to us in life. We can change the course of our lives if we don’t like where it’s headed! But now the question herein lies in this…where exactly are we going? What does my future look like?
A Look at Your Daily Life
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
– Mahatma Ghandi
If what Ghandi says here is true, then your beliefs ultimately shape your destiny– your future! What are you believing about yourself and your life? Unless you make a conscious effort to change it, you will find yourself believing it regularly until it creates a reality in your mind–whether the truth or not. This reality shapes your world and how you respond to everything in it. Think about what you are thinking about, because eventually, it becomes what you say and do. Over time, these habits shape the course of your life. So what does your future look like? What are you saying and doing daily? It’s time to take a sincere look at your daily routine.
Let’s say for example that you want to lose weight (I mean what girl doesn’t, right?). Take a look at a typical day. What foods are you eating? How often are you eating them? How active are you during the day? How often do you exercise, if at all? Based on your answers to these questions, we can draw some conclusions about your weight change over time, whether for the good or not.
Personally, I struggled with managing my weight for some time, and it all drew from habits I was establishing. There were many days where I’d tell myself, “I’ve had a hard day. I’m going to treat myself to this dessert.” There would be other days where I would say “I’m tired, I think I’ll skip my workout for now.” One day of doing this would turn into two and then three. Three days then turned into a week–a week into a month. Before I knew it, I was having dessert after ever meal, every day, and the word “exercise” became non-existent in my vocabulary.
See Your Future–Change Your Destiny
So what does managing weight have to do with your future? The same concept goes for anything in life–do it frequently enough, it will become a part of you. Establish habits that you will thank yourself a day from now, because that day will repeat itself until it becomes your everyday, and your everyday is your life. So take a hard look at your daily routine and be honest with yourself where you can make some changes–your future depends on it!
