Know what those are over the horse’s eyes? I happen to recently learn that they are called blinkers.
Blinkers are a piece of horse tack that keep horses from being able to look behind (and sometimes) to the sides. Most racehorse trainers believe blinkers help keep horses focused on what’s in front of them, thus encouraging them to pay attention to the race rather than distractions, like the crowd. You have probably seen them on driving horses, as they are often used to keep them from being distracted or spooked on crowded or busy streets and such.
So is this a lesson on horse accessories? By all means no; I know very little about horse equipment. What I do know is that, much like these horses, you are running a race. Except this race is not a competition against others, but a destination you are aiming to reach before your life comes to a completion.
The problem herein lies when you keep looking back, getting stuck in your past or dwelling on your surroundings or even the “crowd.” Rather than moving forward, you lose momentum and get caught up with the things around and behind you. Or you might be “spooked” by unforeseen circumstances or challenges in life that steer you off course. You may feel pressured by the expectations of those you perceive as the spectators in your life, especially family.
You may be getting distracted by the other “horses” in the race (when you compare yourself with others.) You live your life trying to keep up with or surpass other people when you could be channeling that effort into just becoming the best version of yourself; the unique and beautiful person God created you to be!
So here is where the “blinkers” come into play. Picture yourself metaphorically putting on horse blinkers in your perspective of life. Now don’t shut everything out altogether; horses don’t become blind to their surroundings, they are just encouraged to focus where they need to. Shut out the distractions in life. Don’t compare your position in the race with others; we are all at different stages, and each part can be uniquely enjoyed. This focus will keep you from looking to your rear and to the sides. You no longer care what others think of you. The finish line will begin to appear, the goal set before you is suddenly in view. It’s always been there; it’s just now you have enough clarity to see it. With clarity comes vision, with vision purpose, with purpose drive and with drive you can win your race!
Regain your focus. Keep your eyes on the prize and your dreams set before you. Never forget; winning is not in rushing through the process but enjoying the journey along the way to your destiny. Focus is the factor that will keep you on that desired path.
“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,” Philippians 3:13 NKJV
